Peking Opera is a traditional Chinese art form that combines music, dance, costumes and acrobatics. It is a visual spectacle with embroidered silk colourful costumes, golden dragons and exotic birds. The story of boy meets girl from different social backgrounds is a common theme in Peking Opera. The struggle they have to be together and the struggle of the two lovers who are kept apart by their families is portrayed through the use of rapid-fire acrobatics and martial arts movements.
The music in Peking Opera is also an important part of the performance. It is characterized by its unique rhythms and melodies that are often accompanied by traditional Chinese instruments such as the erhu and pipa. The performers also use their voices to sing in a unique style that is specific to Peking Opera.
The costumes worn by the performers are also an important part of the performance. They are often embroidered with intricate designs and patterns that are specific to the character being portrayed. The costumes are also designed to allow for the rapid movements and acrobatics that are often performed during the show.
A dragon is a large and spectacular part of the performance. The dragon is often portrayed as a symbol of power and strength in Chinese culture and is used to represent the power of one of the families.
